Figure 2. L-arginine depletion generates superoxide by uncoupling of eNOS. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) catalyses the conversion of L-arginine to nitric oxide (NO) and L-citrulline. An upregulation of arginase results in depletion of L-arginine and causes uncoupling of eNOS to generate superoxide anions (O2.–), which subsequently scavenge NO to generate peroxynitrite (ONOO).
