Movie 1 (HTML version only). Morphological changes that result from vaccinia-virus infection of BS-C-1 cells. The infection of BS-C-1 cells [African green monkey (Cercopithecus aethiops) kidney cells] with vaccinia virus induces two distinct forms of cell motility: (1) cell migration, which is maximal 8–15 h post infection (hpi), and (2) the formation of long neurite-like projections, which form 15–24 hpi, when cell migration has reduced. The video microscopy sequence shows the formation of a virus-induced cell projection. BS-C-1 cells were infected with the Western Reserve (WR) strain of vaccina virus at three plaque-forming units (pfu) per cell; changes in cell morphology were recorded at 3-min intervals 12–21 hpi (swf001cso).
