The diamond symbols denote organisms that have been sequenced:

phi-X bacteriophage = phiX174 (a virus that infects bacteria);
M. genitalium = Mycoplasma genitalium (a bacterium that infects the urogenital tract of humans; it has no cell wall and is the smallest known cellular organism, that can reproduce independently);
H. influenzae = Haemophilus influenzae (a bacterium that infects humans, giving rise to one form of meningitis);
S. cerevisiae = Saccharomyces cerevisiae (budding yeast).

The square symbols denote organisms that are being sequenced:

P. falciparum = Plasmodium falciparum (a malaria parasite that infects humans);
C. elegans = Caenorhabditis elegans (a nematode that is used for developmental biology studies);
A. thaliana = Arabidopsis thaliana (thale cress, a model system for plant biologists);
H. sapiens = Homo sapiens (humans)
