Help
We are developing
this website to ensure it works well on all the common computer platforms.
Software
We try not to use
too many plug-ins but...
Browser compatibility
- We test the
pages on several browsers (For Netscape and Internet Explorer, versions 3.0
or higher are best).
- For the CHIME
molecular models, both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, versions
3.0 and 4.0 or higher, are known to work well (with the appropriate CHIME
plug-in).
Viewing
- We hope the
site will be easy to read on 15+ inch monitor screens
Printing size
- We have sized
the tables and PDFs so they should print onto A4 or US letter paper (if you
have problems, try selecting or deselecting 'shrink to fit').
Colour
- We have tried
to use only a few colours on most pages, which are viewable on 256 colour
monitors.
- The animations
and figures/photographs do use millions of colours (let us know if you have
problems?).
- We have used
a white background on the pages (check your browser is not changing the colour
of pages).
Graphics and
figures
- Although we
have tried to provide 'text alternatives', the site will be much better on
browsers that allow graphics.
- You need your
graphics facility to be 'switched on' on the browser.
Adobe
Acrobat PDF files
Dynamic
sitemap
- Enables you
to navigate around the website without using frames.
- Loads a new,
small browser window showing a series of expandable 'folders and files'. Just
click on the 'folders' to expand them, and double click on the filenames of
'files' to open specific pages. A selected page will open in a new browser
window, but further requests should open in the same window.
- You should end
up with only three windows: the original window you used to load the sitemap
window (you can close this and still navigate around the site), the sitemap
window and the window with the results from any selections. You can, of course,
close the sitemap window and revert to navigating around the site by using
the buttons or links.
- Uses JavaScript,
which is a platform-independent applet (small computer program) that temporarily
loads onto your computer (from our website server over the web).
- Will only work
on browsers than can accept and run such applets (Netscape 3.0 and 4.0 and
Internet Explorer 4.0 seem to be fine). If your browser won't work you should
be referred back to the static sitemap page.
Please contact
us if you have any specific problems and we will try to solve them. As we
solve people's problems (and our own), we will post the answers here.
